Common Room Transformation
Last fall, after months of renovating the two portable classroom units at the Sleep Center, volunteer workers were exhausted but happy with the results. The restrooms, showers, office space, laundry, and common room were tremendous assets for sheltering and working with clients.
However, burn-out and limited funds meant delaying one needed project – new flooring for the common room. As time went on, the original carpet frayed and took on increasing “atmosphere” with months of use such as serving meals.
Of course, everything changed in March. COVID-19 rules about social distancing meant removing chairs and tables from the room. The Center was open 24/7, including three meals a day, but meals had to be consumed outside. With much of the space now cleared out, it was time for the old carpet to go and new flooring to appear.
The transformation finally came together in late August. Donations funded the purchase of vinyl plank flooring materials. A couple of strong young guys from the SC removed the carpet. When initial efforts at installation by non-professionals proved unworkable, An All American Contractor was able to bring in floor layers John Grant Sr. and Jr. to do the job. Both Connor’s Flooring and AAAC discounted their prices to make the project possible.
The results are dramatic. Keeping the area clean and sanitary is now practical. The vibe of the room is totally different. COVID rules still limit occupancy, but we are ready for more intensive use when things open up. Especially on cold days, clients who have been outside all day need a place to warm up and fuel up before heading to their huts. And our Exit Homelessness program can really use the program and meeting space.
